Susan,
Elsa is beautiful! my daughter (also from Nanjing) has been home for 7 months- she also had a lot of self soothing behaviors- she'd get on all 4's and rock- do the head rocking thing and has sucked her thumb to the point of cracked skin/etc......while in China I would rub her belly/back while she would go to sleep and the rocking stopped- she never rocked to sleep again- (although would do it during the day if she got upset- this stopped after a few months home)......by 5 months home she stopped sucking her thumb to fall asleep but will still do it if she wakes up in the middle of the night......Eva could not climb stairs (she was a week shy of 2 when I picked her up) could not run and fell down a lot while walking- now she navigates a playground better than most 2.5 year olds, climbs stairs alone and can jump with the best of them! I think most improvement will come from opportunity- I wish you and your family the best during the rest of your China trip- a safe (and uneventful!) trip home- congratulations on your new addition!!!!
